3 MUST-VISIT FARMERS’ MARKETS IN MONTEREY

With the nickname “Salad Bowl of the World,” it shouldn’t be a surprise that Monterey County is filled to its limits with fresh farmers’ markets. Both big and small, Monterey’s markets offer a variety of locally grown produce, handcrafted hot foods and unique goods. Here are three worth visiting while in Monterey.

MARINA FARMERS’ MARKET

The Marina Farmers’ Market sets up shop every Sunday  from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 215 Reservation Road in the Marina Village Shopping Center. As a member of the Everyone’s Harvest Certified Farmers’ Markets, this market is home to a wide range of local farmers that pride themselves in quality products. Shop plants and flowers from Blossom Hill Nursery, organic vegetables from Ken’s Top Notch and raw honey from MockaBees Apiary. Visit the Everyone’s Harvest farmers webpage for the full list of vendors.

PACIFIC GROVE FARMERS’ MARKET

The Pacific Grove Farmers’ Market is also part of the Everyone’s Harvest Farmers’ Market organization. Situated on the corner of Central Ave and Grand Ave in Pacific Grove, this market is open every Monday from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. A variety of small-scale family farmers (70% are certified organic), offer a wide selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, prepared food and artisanal items. Enjoy a massage from Tabetha Griffith Massage or pick up a custom-carved knife from H&H Woodworking. Pacific Grove Farmers’ Market also hosts several events throughout the year, including a tree lighting ceremony in December and cooking demonstrations in the spring.

THE FARMERS’ MARKET AT OLD MONTEREY MARKETPLACE

Established in 1991, the Farmers’ Market at Old Monterey Marketplace boasts a lengthy history of popular markets. Held on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. (Oct through April) and 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. (May through Sep), this market stretches three and half city blocks along Alvarado Street. During the summer, it’s one of the largest gatherings of people in Monterey County, attracting more than 10,000 locals and visitors. World-renowned vendors offer everything from crafts and jewelry to furniture and organic produce. The best part? The farmers’ market is just a small part of what you can do while in Old Monterey. Other nearby activities include the Monterey County Youth Museum, Ice Skating by the Bay and winery sip ‘n paints. Read more about Old Monterey here.
